Educated at Westminster School and an Exhibition Scholar to Exeter College, University of Oxford; I am a published author, teacher and tutor. Experienced and dedicated - I find it a great reward to see my students find their confidence and succeed.
My aim is to equip every student to read a text - whether poetry, drama or prose - and write about it clearly and with authority.
I teach students the skills and confidence for exam success. My approach is conversational, accessible and discussion based. We read and annotate in detail in each session - in a way that is built around students' needs. I collaborate with students on their writing, and once they are confident and clear about independent working, provide precise marking to help them improve.

Melissa not only gave me a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the texts on the syllabus but rebirthed my love for English. We read the texts from beginning to end which is rare and she recommended texts and articles relating to the subject matter to give us an immersive understanding of the text. This made me fall in love with reading and I discovered a new appreciation for literature and read a lot in my spare time trying to get through the list of recommended books I demanded from Melissa once I graduated from sixth form college.
As someone who is dyslexic, I have always struggled with English and my confidence when it comes to reading and writing but the support and warm-heartedness I received from Melissa and the encouraging environment she creates in her classroom is unparalleled with any other learning format I have experienced. The whole class could confide in her about worries or concerns not only in regard to our work but any matter of life’s tribulations.
Melissa is the reason I managed to get an A in A-level English Literature in only a year, the reason I got into my dream university and the reason The Great Gatsby is my favourite novel. She is professional, kind, firm and giving—all the qualities of an incredible teacher.

Her knowledge of the text was second to none, especially with regards to Shakespeare and Milton's Paradise Lost, whilst her friendly and amiable way of teaching me was very effective. Within a short space of time, I knew Paradise Lost inside out (even though I initally loathed the text) and my essay writing skills had improved immensely.

Melissa is a fantastic teacher who helped me regain my passion for literature and reading. Her lessons were fun and we had many opportunities to discuss topics and themes as a group, sharing our interpretations and opinions. If we had a particular interest, she would bring in more research, expanding our knowledge beyond the set syllabus and connecting the subject to current events, which made the lessons even more engaging. We also had the opportunity to go and see the plays we studied in the theatre and this helped us understand the work from a new perspective. Moreover, she recommended other adaptations such as films or related books to further our understanding and for our enjoyment.
I found that with Melissa's feedback, I improved my essays greatly throughout the year. She set us homework, adapting it to our individual areas of improvement, which was very useful and productive. She was always patient, supportive and responsive to our specific needs and learning styles. If we needed clarity on a particular point, we felt comfortable to ask for help in class and after lessons. As a class, we all improved and built up our confidence in the subject. It was a supportive environment to work in and we collaborated together.
Despite completing the course in one year, I felt I learnt and understood the subject in full as Melissa structured the course so that we had lots of time for essay practice, revision and consolidation. Without her support, I would not have been able to achieve the grade I did and I have continued to enjoy literature even now due to her passion and dedication.
